Tradition is very important to southerners, which is why we make it a point to celebrate our heritage every year.
That’s exactly what happens twice a year in Elberta during the German Sausage Festival. During the last Saturday of both March and October, a celebration takes place from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. in Elberta Town Park.
In addition to being an homage to German grub, the event is also a fundraiser for the Elberta Volunteer Fire Department. Thirty-thousand attend the event annually, and 7,000 pounds of sausages are sold. The sausages are made from a recipe handed down from the town’s founding fathers.
Give your wurst the best German treatment possible… sample it alongside sauerkraut, German-style filled cabbage, potato salad, and goulash. Pluse, there’ s a Bier Garden that you won’t want to miss! They also serve up some American fare like red beans and rice, burgers, hot dogs, BBQ sandwiches, ice cream, popcorn, and peanuts.
The morning of the festival, running enthusiasts (or those who wish to work up an appetite) can take part in the Weiner Dash 5K & Fun Run. Runners follow a certified 5K course through the countryside around Elberta. The Fun Run is approximately 1 mile. All runners receive a t-shirt plus 2 beverage tickets and a meal ticket to redeem at the festival later that day.
This family-friendly event has plenty of entertainment, too! Adults will love shopping at over 200 arts and crafts booths offering a variety of wares, while kids (and kids-at-heart) won’t be able to get enough of the carnival rides. The festival is set to the soundtrack of live entertainment with polka and German tunes playing alongside country and contemporary music throughout the day.
